I'll put it here for everyone to see.
The reason it's done this way is because XP and 2K install / see PWS as a Device
Uninstall IIS.
Open a command window by clicking Start > Run > type: cmd and click OK
Enter the following exactly as you see it here:
SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
and press enter.
Reboot.
Go to control panel, double click computer management and then double click component services.
Click Services and see if there is an entry for PWS and if so right click it and then scroll to "all
tasks" and select Stop.
When it stops close the panel.
Go back to control panel and double click Add/Remove hardware.
In the next panel select "Uninstall a Device" and click Next.
In the next panel check the box "Show hidden devices" and the list will expand. Scroll down the list
and search for PWS or Personal Web server, if found click once to select it and then click Next.
When it is done uninstalling Close the control panel and reboot.
( Do *not* arbitrarily remove anything with a question mark, because that is not it )
If not found here, click Cancel.
"If" PWS does not show using the above method, right click My Computer, click Properties, click the
Device Manager button and when it opens, click View, and select "Show hidden devices"
Then click the plus sign by "Non-Plug and Play Drivers."
When the list expands, scroll down and find PWS ( or Personal Web Server ) right click and select
Uninstall.
When it's done, close Device Manager, restart the machine and reinstall IIS.
Good luck.

There is a way to disable / remove PWS from your machine. However it requires configuring the
machine to show hidden devices in Device manager ( fairly easy ) and then removing the PWS entry
from the normally hidden "Non Plug and Play Devices" section. ( also easy )
If you want to try it post back and I'll post the instructions.
However be advised this is not a "Microsoft " recommended procedure, and I accept no reasonability
if you wind up having to reformat and reinstall anyway.
That said, I made the same mistake on a Windows 2K Pro machine and used this procedure to "fix" it.
