How to replace a portion of multiple generics

I can't seem to find a way to replace a portion of multiple generics with a
named resource. For example, I assign a generic resource at 200% to a task.
Say later on, only one needs to be replace by a named resource which should
still leave one generic. So orignally I had Generic = 200%, then replaced one
so it should now be Generic = 100% and John Doe = 100%. When I do a replace,
I get all the work transferred to the named resource. Is there a way to split
that up? Thanks!

There are a million permutations that can occur when re-allocating hours
from one resource to another and a lot depends on your settings of "Fixed
Work", "Fixed Duration", or "Fixed Unites" and whether the task is effort
driven or not.

One way I was able to make your scenario work was to have my task set as
"Fixed Work" (which by definition is "Effort Driven") and using the split
screen with "Resource Work" view on the bottom I reduced the generic units
down to 100%, hit OK. (duration will double temporarily). I then add a
named resource at 100% and the duration will get reduced back to the
original duration and now both Generic and Named Resource are allocated at
100% with the same amount of work on the original duration.

Thanks Johathan!

I do have the task as fixed work. However, I was using the 'Assign Resource'
button instead of the split screen so the control is very limited. I guess
there isn't an 'automated' way to do it in one sweep - only the way you
described (where you need to manually reduce the generic and manually add the
person).

You are right, there is no way to automate the replacement of a named
resource with only part of a generic resource's effort when you have defined
one generic to represent more than one person. That is why it is better if
possible to assign generics as representing only one person so when you are
ready to do your replacement, it can easy be done using the Assign Resource
replace feature.
