How to report timesheets for LOCAL Resources

Sandeep Nahta

Hi

We are using Project Server 2003 and Project Professional .

In all the enterprise projects ...we have some local resources also.
Enterprise resources has the PWA timesheet and can report time
directly but
what about local resources.

My understanding was for these LOCAL resources Project Pro will allow
Managers to enter their time directly in the plan and can take updates
for enterprise resources from PWA.

When i am trying to enter timesheet for these local resources. I am
getting Out of Sync error and updates getting wiped off as soon as I
hit Yes.

Please guide what is the best way to get the timesheet ( actuals ) for
these local resources.

Thanks

Sandeep --

Your use of Managed Time Periods conflicts with your use of local resources.
When using Managed Time Periods, Project Server 2003 assumes that ALL task
updates originate on the PWA timesheet page of the assigned resources, and
you CANNOT manually enter progress in the Microsoft Project 2003 plan
(except for progress on Milestones). Therefore, you must either dump using
local resources or dump the Managed Time Periods feature. I am not aware of
any other way around this impasse. Hope this helps.

In cases such as these, we use project server accounts and have the PM
log in as that resource and report time in PWA - usually at the end of
the month or the project.

If I may continue this discussion: I like the suggestion to use project
server accounts for Local Resources. Is there a suggestion using this
approach when there are many Local Resources involved where the PM would not
have to log on project server as each individual local resource?

Please advise.

You could use the Adjust Actuals option in the Resource Center and
select all local resources at once. At our company, we only have this
option available to the PMO (EPM admin) because we need to look after
the integrity of the actuals.

To facilitate this process, I usually create the Adjust Actuals view I
need (resources, time frame), export it to Excel, have the people fill
out their actuals in the Excel sheet and return it to me. That way,
you can reduce the error margin on this kind of manual adjustments.
