How to restore Word insertion point size?

Suddenly the insertion point in Word 2003 SP3 (Windows XP) is less than half
its usual height, and thicker (it was OK earlier in the day). I have
restarted my computer with no effect. Interestingly it's fine while I'm
typing in this message box. How do I get my old insertion point back?
