How to retain character consistency in multiple Word Art headings

I am in the process of creating an informational page with headings for each
subject. Using "Word Art" enables me to produce the text effect I need but
when the headings contain a various amount of characters, I can't achieve a
consistency in the way they look (height, width, thickness, etc.). I have
tried making the Word Art "boxes" the same size but that doesn't solve the
problem either. Neither does "spacing over" to make the headings with less
characters match the ones with more characters. Has anyone found a solution
to this?

Hi J.,

What version of Word and what are the exact steps
you're using (including the font and some sample text for
more than one heading) that you're using.

Bob,

I am using Microsoft Office 2003 and I am creating a document in the
"Publisher" program. The headings in the document that I am creating with
Word Art are in the font, "Times New Roman," size 18, bold.

One of the headings is: "Off-Campus Access to Periodical Databases"
Another is: "Access to VC Library Collection"
Another is: "Questions"

The steps I am taking are: __Go to "Insert" then "Picture" then "WordArt"
__Then I choose the 2nd style on
the 2nd row from the top
__Then in the "Edit WordArt Text"
box I type the heading as above

The headings having different amounts of characters makes a difference in
how they look. I have tried it with & without a "return" at the end of the
heading. Have also tried "spacing over" to make the shorter headings take up
as much room as the longer ones. This makes some difference but does not
achieve enough consistency. I have also checked the size of the "box" that
contains the lettering to make all boxes the same size, but that doesn't help
either. I AM using shadows & lines on the text, if this makes any
difference.

I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

Hi Judy,

I've tried the steps you listed and copied then pasted each
of the headings you listed in blank Publisher and Word
documents using WordArt and the gallery setting you chose
and at the font size you mentioned and other than the length
from the different number of characters in each, the
results came out to be consistent.

Do you have the same issue in blank .pub and .doc files as
in your other document?

Do you have any 'autofit' settings turned on in Publisher?

In the WordArt toolbar if you select the right hand side tool
do you have spacing set to 'Normal'?

What is the build level in Help=>About in Word and Publisher?

Bob -

Thanks so much for your help. As I read your message I realized one thing
that I didn't tell you and that might be affecting my outcome... I was using
one completed heading to create the next one -- in order to retain the color
& shadowing settings I had chosen. When I started each one from "scratch"
.... it worked just fine & they were all consistent! You helped me figure
out what I was doing wrong ! Thanks again!
