HOW TO REVERSE THE ROW OR COLUMN HEADINGS

my row and column headings have been somehow defaulted to appear on the right
hand side of the worksheet ... that is the alphabet ascends from left to
right & the numbers ascend from top down o.k., but they're on the right hand
side of the worksheet

Check Tools > Options. On the International tab, there's a setting for the
'default direction.' (Even if it shows left-to-right, you might try changing
it, exiting, then changing it back).

B Peltzer you are awesome ! Can't tell you how valuable your solution was to
us. We had spent literally hours trying to 'logic' out the correct settings,
but would NEVER have thought to look under the International tab.
