How to reversibly close Outlook with some files open?

Windows Update routinely closes Outlook when it has email files open, and
then restarts Outlook with these same files open after it re-boots with
patched installed.

How can a user accomplish the same result, i.e., close Outlook with some
email files open and then have these files re-open when Outlook is re-started?

Use File-> Close to close Outlook instead of the top right X.
