How to save copies of my emails in case of a crash or wipeout

Hi!

My husband had his computer wiped out because of problems (the hard
disk was erased) and when that happened he lost some emails that had
important information in them that he needs now several years later.

I am concerned about this happening to me and so I'm wondering, how do
I save emails to a removable disk (ie: thumbdrive)? I seem to
remember at one time that emails ended in .eml but I can't find
anything like that on my computer.

Personally, I prefer to drag individual messages out to the Finder,
where they are stored as textual .eml files that can be opened in any
text editor.

Anyhow, there are several ways, each with its own pros and cons:
