how to save something as default setting

In Word 2010, I finally found where I can change my footnotes so that
are lifted off the line and appear smaller and in the upper right area
to the word where I insert the footnote instead of same size on the
same line position. The problem is, I have to change the foot notes
each time I insert them. How can I make them all default to the style
I want?

The default Footnote Reference style is Default Paragraph Font +
Superscript, so I'm not sure why you're having this issue, but if you modify
the Footnote Reference styles and select the radio button for "New documents
based on this template," the setting should be saved as the default.

Thanks but I still don't know how to change it. Can you give me
instructions on how to change it?

radio buttons. Also i don't have font called Paragraph font +.

Okay. I know how to do that. But how do I save that superscript style
to the document so I don't have to change the style every time I
insert a new footnote. It puts them like this2 for example for FN #2
instead of the way footnotes should appear. I have to change the style
each time I add a footnote. Under the references tab,I don't see any
place to save this an an option.

That still does not save it as default settings. I know how to change
it each time I insert but there should be a way that all your
footnotes default to the way you want to save them.

That certainly sets it as the default for that document. If you want to set
it as the default for all new documents, then check the box for "Add to
template" in the Modify Style dialog (Word 2003 and earlier) or select the
radio button for "New documents based on this template" (Word 2007 and
above).
