how to scan document into word 2003

whenever i scan a document into word 2003 i continue to get a error message
that says go to ocr directory. also how do i get a document from microsoft
paint into word and edit it

Describe exactly what you are doing when you scan and the exact wording of
the error mesage.

You cannot edit a 'document' from Windows Paint. Paint produces graphics
files which are not editable in Word. To convert a graphical representation
of text to editable text you need to use OCR software, This might be the
Microsoft Office Document Imaging software that came with Office (but is not
installed by default) or something better. You probably have OCR software in
the software package supplied with your scanner.
