How to select Selection Cursor from Pen Cursor

S

Steve

I need some help getting back the selection cursor in
OneNote. I am for some reason unable to get the
selection cursor back. I selected the "Pen" button on
the standard formatting toolbar, and then wanted to
switch back to the selection cursor. For some reason I
can not get it back though. I feel kind of dumb,
considering I consider myself quite computer literate. :p

Is there a bug, or do I need to press something other
than the "Type/Selection Tool" button?

Also, on another note, is there any way to set OneNote so
that new screen clippings get placed in the same Side
Note, versus always creating a new Side Note (ie.
section )

Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve N.

Steve,
The Type/Selection button should be doing it. What happens when you click it
and then try to select?
I just had a thought: Go to Tools--> Options and go to the handwriting
category. What is the setting for "Automatically switch between Pen and
Selection Tool"?

As for the screen clipping, I must not be understanding what you are doing.
When I take a screen clipping, it appears on the current page, not on a new
page. Doesn't matter whether it is a regular note page or a side note page.
Can you tell us step by step what you are doing and whether you have the
released version of SP1 installed or the preview version?

Hi Kathryn,

Thanks for responding to my post. I've been trying
different combinations of things since I posted the
original message. For starters, let me tell you which
version of OneNote I have installed:

Office OneNote 2003 (11.6360.6360) SP1

Now a little more information on my problem. I've
figured out how to get out of the "Pen" cursor mode.
However, I have to use what I would call a non-standard
process to get back into the "Type/Select" cursor mode.
Basically, I have to close OneNote (the tray icon is
still running), after I select the "Type/Select" cursor
mode, in order for the cursor to actually act the way it
should. Prior to pressing the "Type/Select" cursor
button on the toolbar, I have the "Pen" mode selected.
The "Pen" mode works as it should be expected. But, as
mentioned, when I try to select "Type/Select" cursor
mode, when I am in the "Pen" cursor mode, the cursor
takes on the icon of the "Type/Select" cursor mode, but
continues to behave like the "Pen" mode.

Now there's another twist to what I am experiencing.
I've tried the above several times now, and every time I
select the "Pen" mode, the Windows Installer runs and
tries to install Windows Messenger 5.0. It starts the
installation process, and then fails with the following
error:

"An error occured during the installation of assembly
component {874793FC-5F43-496A-8FE7-18C4DB9B143D}
HRESULT: -2147024864

If I click ok on the error dialog box, the installation
routine backs out, and then automatically starts over
trying to install Windows Messenger 5.0. It does so in
an endless loop, whether I try to cancel out of the
installation or not. The only way I can stop the
installation is by ending the process using the Task
Manager.

All in all, OneNote is behaving a little strange. :) Is
this a known problem? Any suggestions are appreciated.

No, as far as I know this isn't a known problem. It doesn't sound like it is
just a OneNote problem either. I am wondering: Since it sounds like you are
running on a Tablet, have you installed Win XP SP 2? I do know that it fixes
some pen and cursor problems for tablets. Also, have you tried a detect and
repair on your Office installation? Finally, have you tried the simple
solution of re-booting?

Meanwhile: Anyone else have ideas?
