I have a laptop (Toshiba Satellite 1905-S277) which has a built-in modem.
I am using Win XP with Office 2000.
I would like to send a fax from inside Word. I do as follows:
File/New/letters & Faxes tab/Fax Wizard
In step two of wizard it asks for Fax Software but I don't have one and only
my printers name appear in the box.
Although I don't have a fax software, I think as far as I have a modem and I
can connect to Internet, it should function. but it seams it doesn't. Should
I procure a fax program? Can get a simple one as freeware from Internet?
TIA

To send a 'std' fax requires a land line connection and a fax printer driver
installed
The Fax driver may be installed from Win, see help, often included with
modem software or a seperate Fax app.
To send/receive a Fax via the internet requires you to sign up to an
internet fax service

Dear Ddavid

Thanks for your reply.
However I didn't completely get your points.
Does syd stands for Standard?

Is fax printer driver different from Modem Driver?
Is there and free service for sending fax trough Internet?

TIA

Yes to all you questions.

When you install a FAX Utility, it installs a new Driver which will appear
as a Printer (but called FAX). When you have created a document that you
wish to fax to someone, you use File, Print and select the FAX driver. Most
FAX Utilities will have integrated with Office so that it will automatically
have picked up the FAX number from your document and will sent it
automatically.

For fax across the Internet, search Google for 'Internet Fax Services'.
These are usually free but the recipient will receive your document with
covering Advert in front. You email the fax to the service provider and they
will then send it as a fax message for you.

Some ISPs provide a fax service with your Internet access. Check with
whoever you use.

You can install the Windows XP Fax Service available as an additional
Windows Installation. Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Windows Programs. On
the dialog box that shows up, select the Windows Fax Service. Make sure you
have your Windows XP iinstallation disk.

Then, after completing the installation, read this page on how to integrate
the fax service with Outlook:

Dear Milly

Thanks alot for your assistance. I did as you told and it worked. Even it
didn't ask for Windows CD.
You can't imagine my pleasure when I see my first fax sent by my laptop
(sending from my laptop to my home?!?)
Windows has lots of good options and I wander why they dont install all of
them at first shipment. I think it is better to remove them if we dont need
them rather then install when e neen.

Anyway many thanks for your help.

Very Sincerely Yours

You're welcome. Glad to see that it worked for you. As for default
installations, many people prefer to add the services they need rather than
have to remove them, but I see both sides of the question.
