How to set Finish date to Actual Finish date when Task is completed

Ayesha Khan

Hi,
If any of my resources compelet task and set 100% after schedule finish
date, how can i make my "Finish" date equals to Actual Finish date and
update Actual Work automatically which show total hrs spent on a task. My
task calculation settings are automatic and all the four options are
selected
1. Move end of completed parts after status date back to status date
And Move start of remaining parts back to status date
2. Move start of remaining parts before status date forward to status date
And move end of completed parts forward to status date.

My status date is equal to surrent date. Secondly which baseline should i
set in "Earned Value" option, i have set 4 basleline in my project should i
use most recent one.

Thanks
Ayesha

Hi,

Wheneber there is an Actual Finish date on a task, Finish will ALWAYS and
AUTOMATICALLY be equal to Actual finish.

In Tools, Options, Calculation, click on Earned Vale to select which
baseline you want to use.

Hope this helps,

I will give you an example to make it more clear. Suppose task A having 16
hrs of work schedule start date is "03/20/2008" and Finish is "03/21/2008",
but resource finishes this task and complete the status 100% on "03/22/2008"
then what will be the finish date now, "03/21/2008" or "03/22/2008". I am
having this problem, when resource update the task completed after schedule
date, project plan shows the finsh date as scheduled one not actual.

<Hi,

What I meant is that oin your example, Project will also show actual finish
as 21/3. That is because you didn't tell the SW what the actual finish date
is.
You have to tell Project one way or another what the actual finish date is.
To complete this, how is the resource entering actual data?

Project is published on Project Sever , where resource update % Complete
field according to actual values. These update the approved and applied on
Plan.

Hi,

Can't the resource then enter ActualFinish as well inPWA?
If not, the project leader has to do so.
Somebody has to tell Project when the task was done.

Resources can send request to update % Complete, delete task and reassign
work from Project server, Which is then approved by project admin and
applied on Plan.
Is there any setting where on PWA where we can configure that when resource
updates task to compelete, set it finish date to actual finish ?

Updating by % complete alone is a very inaccurate way of tracking. Much more
accurate is Actual start then actual work and remaining work. Most accurate
is actual hours by day with remaining work. When remaining work is zero,
task is complete and actual finish is last day with actual work. (Actual
start is first day with actual work.)
