How to set inserted picture to auto update when button greyed out

I am having trouble with an inserted picture (a signature) linked to a Word
Document. The automatic update button is greyed out and not an option.
Often the object does not print though it looks fine on the screen. Any
suggestions would be appreciated. FYI - picture inserted in a text box,
layout behind text.
