Well, I don't have Word 97 available to check, and I'm not sure whether the
feature existed in that version, but in Word 2003, it's at Tools | Options |
Spelling & Grammar: Grammar: Settings: Spaces required between sentences. If
you select 2, then instances of a single space will be marked with a green
wavy underline (assuming you have "Check grammar as you type" enabled) or
will be marked as grammar errors when you run the grammar check manually.

You can't. The best you can do is set the Grammar options to alert you to
instances of only one space.
