How to set up inventory management utilizing office products

I work for an internet company that sells around 4000 products. Our
inventory is currently in an excel file. Whenever an order comes in via
email, we must go in and manually remove the items from the inventory. We
are looking for a way to have the inventory reduced automatically when the
email comes into our computer system. Do you know if excel is capable of
performing this function? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Will the excel file that we currently have our inventory in interface with
any shopping cart that you are aware of?

Excel is a spreadsheet application. You may wish to use something more
in line with an Access database or perhaps an inventory management
application.

There are many off the shelf inventory management programs. One that's
pretty good and is reasonably priced is Quickbooks. While you can
develop a one off piece of software you will spend much more and get
fewer options that a prepackaged program. Sometime it's just best to
buy what you need. If you're company is serious about inventory control
they just need to do some research to find the right product and then
buy it. Many of these program will also contain modules for order entry
and customers and vendors. Quickbooks for instance has all of these plus
A/P, A/R and financial reporting.
