How to show merge fields in second page

This posting is my last resort:

I have a Word Mail Merge from a text file.
The merge is a letter that may change its length depending on how much
data is merged.
I have to show a Page Header text from the merge field on subsequent
pages but show nothing on the first page.

Current Solution:
- Inserted Page Header field into page header on the first page (the
letter template is only one page)
- Set Show Different First Page on the Page Setup properties
- Generated Letter but extra data spills onto second page
- Header is showing on first page only: none on the second.

Problem 1:
- I cannot insert page break on the template as letter may grow in
size and spill to next page

Question:
- How do I manage to supress header on the first page when setting up
a header on only a one-page template?

Any help at this point would be much appreciated. Thank you!!

Set up the header without the Different First Page box checked under the
Layout Tab of the Page Setup dialog. Then on the Headers and Footers
toolbar, click n the Page Setup dialog and go to the Layout tab and check
the Different First Page boc. The header that you set up will disappear,
but if the document runs to more than one page, it will re-appear.
