yes--the file was working in 2000. something happened during the
reconfiguration? am thinking that perhaps I should uninstall 2007 and
re-install outlook 2000 and try to reduce the size of the file--file
is around 1.9 gigs I believe (truly huge)..
If Outlook 2000 was not complaining about this PST and it was working, you
are VERY lucky indeed. PST size problems can start at around 1.5GB and
really become evident at 1.8GB.
It's possible you may be able to tweak the size restrictions in the registry
(in particular the WarnFileSize setting) so that Outlook won't complain. If
OL 2000 could open it, OL 2007 should be able to as well. However, if
adjusting the settings works, it would be in your best interest to migrate
the data to a new Unicode PST immediately. See this for the settings
adjustment:

what about temoving the file altogether from the computer--can
outlook start without a pst file or can I direct it to another pst I
have?
You can do this easily. In Control Panel's Mail applet, create a new PST
and make it the delivery location. Then the next time Outlook starts, the
new PST will be used for mail delivery (and all the other default folders).
Adjust the WarnFileSize setting to match the MaxFileSize setting and try to
open the old PST. If it works, you can then copy the data it contains to
the new PST and you won't have to worry about the size issue again. If you
do get the data moved, make sure you adjust the *FileSize settings back to
their original values.
