How to Stop automatically approving tasks

S

Stacey

We are just starting to use Project2007 (we've been using 2002 for years).
When I assign myself a task, and submit hours, it automatically approves my
hours (by me)...we are a small company and right now I am the only one using
this new version. How do I stop it from doing that automatically, I would
like to see each change and then decide to approve or reject tasks.

Thank you! Hope you are having a fantastic day!

If you are entering time in the My Timesheet page (not the My Tasks page),
and you are designated as your own Timesheet Approver, then the system
auto-approves your Timesheet submissions. It won't auto-approve the
Timesheets that anyone else sends to you for approval. You ARE talking
about time you entered in the My Timesheet page, right? The My Tasks page
is where you enter task progress manually, or where you import the time from
the My Timesheet page. Let us know.

I forgot to mention that in the future, you should post your Project Server
questions in the microsoft.public.project.server newsgroup, as this
newsgroup is dedicated to the Microsoft Project desktop application only.
Hope this helps.

Thank you Dale - I was going crazy. I still wish MS wouldn't assume what I
want and let me decide if I want to automatically approve my tasks.

Unlike Project Server 2002, in Project Server 2007 there are TWO types of
time tracking:

1. On the My Timesheet page, users enter all types of work-related time,
including project task work, non-project work, and non-work such as
vacation. Each user has a Timesheet Manager who approves the user's
timesheet. If you are your own Timesheet Manager, the system auto-approves
your timesheets. I see nothing wrong with Microsoft's assumption at this
point. After all, why would you need to approve time that you personally
entered? NOTE: Project work entered on the My Timesheet page DOES NOT
impact the schedule of any project.

2. On the My Tasks page, users enter task progress only. They can manually
enter the time, or if your organization uses the My Timesheet functionality,
they need to import the task progress from the My Tasks page. When a user
submits his/her task updates, the updates go to the manager of the projects
in question. When the manager(s) approve the task updates, Project Server
2007 updates each project with the task progress submitted by team mmebers.

If your organization needs to track all types of time, they you should use
the My Timesheets functionality. If you only need to track task progress,
you should NOT use the My Timesheets functionality, as it adds a layer of
complexity to your processes. Hope this helps.
