how to stop reminder going forward without erasing previous?

I have a long-standing recurring event on my calendar.

I would like the reminder to stop, going forward. If I just turn it off, it
turns it off for all the occurences in the series. I want to keep the record
of when the reminder did ring without having to create a new event entry with
new parameters.

Is there a "change going forward" command that I missed?

No, you'd need to make a new event and set the old one to end today.
