How to stop Word 2002 from crashing my display?

Paul Beier

Have tried other discussion groups here but all suggestions have failed to
help. Problem is that every time I try to use Word, the display crashes
after 1 to 15 minutes use.

Have tried reinstalling office, reducing resolution and refresh rates as
well as installing all current drivers, BIOS, windows SP2, office SP1.

Computer will run all day working with other office applications, intensive
3D games and video editing. As soon as I use Word - crash!!! Very
frustrating not being able to do any word processing.

Help!

What do you mean "crashes the display" (i.e.. is the display distorted
or is the app crashing)?
What happens exactly (messages etc.)?
Do you have Norton installed, is this on a network....?

Rob,

thanks for taking an interest. By crash I mean the screen suddenly goes
black like its going into standby mode. I have tried switching the screen on
and off. When the display returns I get the usual grid pattern when the
monitor is not receiving a signal from the computer. The computer seems to
keep running during all of this (the power light remains lit). The only way
I can continue is to reboot the computer which starts it checking for errors
etc. - PITB.

Again I will say that this ONLY ever happens when I use Word - ALL other
applications work fine. I have just paid $US35 to microsoft to seek
assistance from them. Hope it is worth it.

NAV takes too long to load and to check my system. I use the far superior
(IMHO) NOD32 application. No I am not networked.

Hope this clarifies the problem.

Rob,

I made an error also - I have Office 2003 Pro installed - so I guess it must
be Word 2003 not 2002 as I have suggested before.

Paul;
Did you get a response from MS?
I'm over my head here as far as the display is concerned (actually I'm
over my head with a lot of things lately!).
Initially I thought your app was crashing and was going to suggest that,
if you have Norton, disable the plug-in but that's obviously not the
case.
All I can suggest is that you try;

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm.

It seems like most problems opening Word are solved by the solutions at
this site, although I haven't seen anything relating to the screen going
"Boom" it may be worth a shot.

Sorry I can't be of more assistance, please post back if you find the
solution, it is always of use to all who hang around here.

To everyone,

just an update to others with this problem. I paid Microsoft support to
assist me online, so far no success, although they have been very helpful.

My mistake before but Word tends to freeze the screen (no keyboard or mouse
control) while in safe mode. This freezing tends to occur after a number of
other gliches. I get blue "ghosting" of the font when typing. The page
edges go blue and "chunky" when scolling in safe mode. At times, the normal
black font freezes and the faded blue font begins to type. If I scroll, this
blue font moves instead of the black. Also the blue font scrolls UNDER the
black.

I suspect that this is the same problem of screen crashing exhibiting these
symptoms in safe mode.

Other Office application work fine.

Thanks in advance to anyone taking the time to assist me with this
challenging problem.

Have also posted this reply in Office Support.

Paul,

Though i can't help you solve the problem, I have been experiencing the same
thing, Word 2002. I'll be going along fine then the computer stops sending a
signal to the monitor. I'm only running Word and Access on this computer and
haven't had the problem with Access. All my other apps run fine... as do
yours.

I also find it will arbitrarily freeze the whole system, though the display
stays on. Very frustrating. I thought it was a memory problem, though there
is quite a bit on board... but I ran the resource meter, but that stayed very
green... so I'm as baffled as you... so if you do get help, please share
it... at least in general (since you had to pay for it). :)
