How to stop Word 2002 selecting the whole line when you click tothe right?

My new computer has Microsoft Works / Word 2002 installed. When I
position the cursor to the right of a line, the cursor changes to an
arrow pointing left, and when I click, the whole line of text is
selected, just as when you click in the margin to the left. This is
extremely annoying when you want to position the cursor at the end of
the line so as to add some more text. Word 2000 did not do this.

I have done the folowing:
- Uninstalled the Microsoft Works add-in;
- Renamed normal.dot;
- Looked in the Office Startup folder (it's empy);
- Started Word using the command "winword /a".

Only the last action, using winword /a, stops this behaviour, but tis is
no help, because it doesn't use normal.dot, nor create a new one.

I am at a total loss, can anyone help?

Further to this, I found a reference which said that this behaviour
occurs if right-to-left language support is enabled. This support was
installed by default when I got the computer. I uninstalled it as
described here:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs
/en-us/int_pr_install_complex_languages.mspx but I still have the problem.
