How to tame auto-completion of recipient

I'm a big fan of name completion in the "To:" field. However, when
Outlook 2003 thinks that there are possible matches after a letter or
two, it will actually prevent me from typing in more letters until I
press Escape to get rid of the candidate list. Is there a way for me
to keep the list of candidate matches, but still keep typing more of
the recipient without constantly pressing Escape? In another mail
reader (different vendor), the candidate list simply narrows as you
continue typing. Thanks!

That's not how it works for me. I can continue to type and the list will
narrow the number of selects as more fail to match the additional
characters. I've never seen the effect you describe.

Oo. Not good to be the sole person experiencing what seemed like a
tool-specific pathological behaviour. :(
