How to tell Word not to use captions in a List of Tables

I have over 20 tables I made in Excel that already have a table number and
caption. I have imported these tables into Word and am now constructing a
List of Tables. I figured out how to remove a label, but I cannot figure out
how to remove the table number that Word places above the table to link it to
the List of Tables.

Like the TOC, I simply want the List of Tables to refer to the appropriate
page without adding a number or label to the table. Can I do this? Thanks!

Why not just make the Caption style white font, very small (1 pt), and very
short paragraph spacing (Exactly 0.06 seems smallest in Word 2000)? That
way, you can create the table from the captions, but not show the captions.

Why not remove the captions entirely (along with their numbers) and reinsert
titles in the Caption (or any other) style and then build a list of tables
based on that (or any other) style. Captions don't need to be numbered. If
Word is insisting on adding captions, then perhaps the AutoCaption feature
is enabled?

Thanks for the help.

I cannot use the caption provided by Word because they are not formatted
according to the American Psychological Association. That is, they are
indented about 3 spaces where I would like them to go, but I need them flush
with the original margin.

Autocaptioning is off, so it is not affecting anything.

Thanks for anymore ideas.

Anne,

Thanks for the link!

I ended up using your first suggestion about making the caption white. I
placed the caption below each table so it would not interfere with the top
line of the page. Works perfect now. Thanks!
