how to toggle Send/Receive window?

dano

A colleague (OSX 10.4, Entourage 2004) wants to turn off the pop-up
window that indicates when Entourage is communicating with the Exchange
Server to Send/Receive. I seem to remember there was a preference
setting for this, but I am now working in 2008 and do not find such a
pref.

Thanks for any advice.

Dan

(ps: I'm getting a message of an error is posting code. Apologies if
this goes through with bad encoding.)

Hi Dan!

Not a preference. Just wait for it to appear and then click the red
close circle. It should no longer appear.

Hope this helps!

Apparently there must be another option. I sent the recommendation to
him and he replies:

Dan, that¹s what I¹ve been doing all along. But it¹s like playing
whack-a-mole every five minutes, and I have better ways to spend my
time. Is there no way to just disable the function? This is
information that I definitely do not need. Like, it is a MAJOR
annoyance.

I know there was a preference for this thing in an early version of 2004
(or possibly a late version of v.X), but it is apparently gone now. Is
there a hidden plist setting I can tell him to apply?

There was never a preference - for as long as I can remember. You simply
close the window, and it stays shut until you specifically open it again.

Could it be he's running a script or something that is re-opening the
window?

there was other behavior as well. I'm racking my brains trying to recall
all the variations - I seem to remember there was different behaviour
for scheduled mail checks and manual ones.

try this:

1. open the progress window manually
2. move it to a different place on the screen
3. close it with the red close button
4. immediately quit entourage without doing anything else
5. rstart entourage and let the scheduled mail checks run - see if that
made the difference. Don't try a manual check until you're happy the
window is behving.

then, PLEASE, write back and let us know the results!

Not exactly. If you close the window it will automatically open again
the next time it queries the server.

(menu) Window > Progress, or Cmd-7.

(Thanks to the sysadmin at UOregon for the solution.)

Huh?? I don't see how choosing Window > Progress would be a solution to
the problem. When you choose that menu command, Entourage *shows* the
Progress window. To *hide* it, you still have to close the window.

That *is* strange. Maybe the action of opening it and then closing it
resets the preference. But you're absolutely right that the same command
does *not* close the window.
