How to turn off all special formatting for a hyperlink in e-mail?

I have a simple question that should have an elementary answer, but I can not
seem to find it in Outlook's non-helpful help files.

I am composing an e-mail message. I include some text that refers to a
hyper link or could refer to a hyper link, such \\server\drive\folder\file.
Outlook (I have Outlook 2003) insists on underlining it and coloring it blue.
I do not want it underlined or blue. I just want it to appear the way I
typed it as plain text with no special formatting.

Attempting to remove the unwanted formatting, I select the text and click
the appropriate buttons to change the formatting and what happens? Nothing.
The text is still blue, and it is still underlined.

Search as I may, I can not find any options to set that would turn this
behavior off.

So, that is my question: How do I make Outlook stop doing this?
