Help! The AutoCorrect smart button is SO annoying. Does anyone know how
to turn it off? It hides text and I don't want to see it again. Ever.
Thanks. Thanks a bunch!
I put off getting Word 2004 for ages, largely because of that
misfeature. I'd just about gotten used to it and you had to come along
and pick at the scab.
I can't remember how I did it, or if it was standard, but round here,
all I get is a twee little blue underscore animation whenever Word
smugly changes "teh" to "the" and similar. As soon as it has finished,
it leaves and there is no more sign of it unless I sidle the mouse or
the insertion point up to the correction. Then all I get is the final
frame of smugness-goes-to-Hollywood -- a blue underscore with a tiny
disclosure triangle. If I'm foolish enough to approach the triangle,
*then* I get Concorde at Gonesse.
I'm pretty sure that's the minimum exposure you can get to the plane
crash animation without turning autocorrect off altogether. If you get
more than that, ask again, and I'll carefully check all the settings I
might have made to tame it.
A couple of other points to mitigate the autocorrect affliction.
1. Keep your hands off the mouse.
2. Turn off spell-check as you ytpe. If you never make typos... That
way, all you get are the corrects in the autocorrect table in Tools »
autocorrect...
3. Type with your eyes on the keyboard, or on the copy. You don't want
to look competent or you'll never be promoted because you are too
valuable where you are.
Seriously, autocorrect is useful for things other than autocorrect. I
keep all my favourite fractions and other special signs as autocorrect
entries. e.g. extend the ideas you can already see in there like (tm)
for , to (p) for ' for those days one needs a really truly prime and
not a curly close quote.
I always wait till the doc is finished before letting the spell checker
anywhere near it.
