How to turn off automatic updates?

This may be an extremely elementary question, but how do I
turn off automatic updates?

I would prefer to do this manually (also, it always seems to
pop up at inopportune times).

I cannot seem to find the answer to this seemingly simple
question. I'm using Office 2000.

Thank you, DGI

HOW TO: Configure and Use Automatic Updates in Windows XP

Thank you. Perhaps we're talking about two different things
(and perhaps this represents something malicious that I should be
dealing with).

I have automatic updates in Windows disabled, and that's not
the problem.

It's Office 2000. I'll have a web page open and all of a
sudden MS OFFICE 2000 will attempt to download an update, and ask for
my installation disk. I have had this happen three or four times in
the past several weeks.

This appears to have nothing to do with Windows Update. It is
possible that this is some sort of malware issue, but I have several
protections in place against that.

Can anyone help illuminate me?

Thank you, DGI
