How to turn off clipboard icon in word?

How can I disable that annoying little clipboard icon with the "paste"
options that keeps popping up in the middle of a document while I'm working
on it. I've looked at the clipboard help and found nothing so far.

You don't say what Word version you are using, but in 2003 Tools, Options,
Edit, uncheck the "Show Paste Options buttons".
