how to turnoff popups with edit/formatting options as i type in wo

I've just switched from Word 2000 to Word 2003. There are annoying
edit/format option popups that happen sporadically and spontaneously
as I type. This is happening as I type this message. They look like
edit menus. They interfere with my typing and are EXTREMELY annoying.
I've tried turning off every auto-format or auto-edit option in word i
can find and they are still here. How do I get rid of these annoying popups?
