How to type in the margin of a word document?

I have created a word document with 1" margins on the left and right. In
order to code the material in the document, I want to change the margins,
leaving the right one third of the page empty, so that I can type in the
codes on the one third part on the right. Please help. I can't find anything
on this, but it should be easy, no?

Not only should be, but is: simplest is probably textboxes or frames.
Textboxes have a few more formatting options (which you might or might not
need); frame content is part of the main body of the document so can be
included in the TOC.

Tables are another option.

I assume your research skills are up to finding out how to change the
margins.

Thanks Jezebel. I have changed the right margin and put a text box in it. I
don't understand your last clause "frame content is part of the main body of
the document so can't be included in the TOC"?

The comment (when you read it correctly) was meant to contrast the
behavior of text boxes and frames:

- Text boxes are in the drawing layer (the same as floating graphics).
If you put a heading in a text box, it won't be included in the table
of contents (if your document has a TOC).

- Frames are in the document layer (like regular text). If you put a
heading in a frame, it *will* be included in the TOC.

Frames also have the advantage that they can be made part of a paragraph
