How to "un-indent" a paragraph?

My Word 97 seems to have gotten stuck in some kind of indent mode.

I was typing a letter in block style with no indenting, and came to a
place where I needed to type an address, so I used tabs to set off the
lines of the address from the rest of the text in the letter. But now
the paragraph mark is stuck in that "indented" position, and no matter
how many times I type return it just moves down a line, but remains
indented one tab position from the left margin like this (I'll use #
signs to represent the paragraph marks):

line of text blah blah blah blah...etc.
line of text blah blah blah blah#
#
Name of addressee#
Street Address#
City State ZIP#
#
#
#

I've tried the backspace key, and Shift-Tab, but to no avail. What's
the trick to getting those pesky little paragraph marks back over to
the left margin?

Two possibilities:

Click the unindent icon on the format toolbar.

Drag the indent markers to the left on the ruler.

Any of the above methods, or put the cursor in a 'correct' paragraph, click
the Paint Format button, move the cursor into the margin until it becomes a
pointer opposite the paragraph that's 'wrong', and click. This should apply
the correct formatting.

Remember that in general the formatting that's in use when you press return
is continued into the new para. That's why you're getting what you're
getting.

The other thing you need to know is why it did this in the first place.
Could it be that you have the option checked that says Tabs and Backspace
set left indent (under Tools - Options - Edit)? If so try working with that
unchecked.
