How to uncheck "Save picture in document" in Word 2003?

I have inserted a linked PowerPoint file into a Word 2003 document, using
Insert menu --> Object --> "Create from File" tab --> Browse [to select the
PPT file] --> then clicked (turned on) the "Link to File" checkbox (but did
NOT turn on the "Display as Icon" checkbox because I want a visible image in
the Word file). This PPT file contains only one slide, which does have bitmap
graphics in it but is only about 300 KB on disk.

When I save the Word file containing this link, it becomes 22 MB (!!) on
disk, having presumably embedded the PPT content as some grossly inefficient
file format like a BMP. In Word, when I go to Edit menu --> Links, the dialog
shows the linked PPT file having its "Save picture in document" checkbox
checked, AND, grayed out so I cannot uncheck it. How can I get this checkbox
enabled and uncheck it, so as to avoid saving the "picture" (i.e., PPT
content) in the Word document? (I need to insert about 10 such PPT links, so
10 x 22 MB = 220 MB file size is unacceptable. Besides why would I want to
save a linked picture in the document anyway?! That makes it embedded, and
defeats the purpose of using a linked source!)
