Hello Dave,
There's no built-in support to programmatically unload a COM Add-in.
However, there's a possible workaround deserving your consideration.
The addInInstance object in the Connect class can be casted to the type
Microsoft.Office.Core.COMAddIn. It has a property "Connect" to set the
active state of the add-in. Thus, you may want to set
this.addInInstance.Connect = false; in OnStartupComplete. The problem is
that, Connect=false does not unload the add-in, instead, it disables the
add-in. After the run, the add-in's LoadBehavior value in registry will
become "2" which means "disabled". And in the next run of winword, the
add-in won't be loaded until users/programs change the LoadBehavior value.

Note: The MSDN Managed Newsgroup support offering is for non-urgent issues
where an initial response from the community or a Microsoft Support
Engineer within 1 business day is acceptable. Please note that each follow
up response may take approximately 2 business days as the support
professional working with you may need further investigation to reach the
most efficient resolution. The offering is not appropriate for situations
that require urgent, real-time or phone-based interactions or complex
project analysis and dump analysis issues. Issues of this nature are best
handled working with a dedicated Microsoft Support Engineer by contacting
Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS) at
