How to unlock MS Word 2003. I accidentally hit Ctrl+D ?

L

Lorraine

I'm used to using WordPerfect and just got this new pc. After I loaded up MS
Word 2003 for the first time, I hit ctrl+D which in WP inserts the date. In
Word it apparently locks up the program. I can't get it to unlock, even by
going through the unlock a document or subdocument as in the help
instructions. So right now the program is useless. Any suggestions or
ideas? Thanks, Lorraine

Ctrl+D brings up the Format Font dialog box. No telling why it locked up
Word.

If Word is locked up, you can usually force it to close by right-clicking it
on the Windows Task Bar and choosing Close. If Windows then says that it's
not responding, you can then close it.

If Ctrl+D repeatedly makes Word lock up, then I'd suspect that there was an
installation glitch. You might try Help - Detect and Repair to see if that
resolves the problem. If not, then post back here, and there are other
things to try to resolve the problem.

I tried that and it's still locked up. It seems the program itself it
locked up. When the program opens, the cursor blinks with a short line under
it which I assume is the location a character should appear, but does not
allow entry of any keystrokes. When I try to type, a message comes up at the
bottom of the screen that says "this modification is not allowed because the
document is locked." Lorraine

If all new and existing documents are locked for editing, then
it's probably because you have not activated your Word/Office
software, or because you have an expired trial version of Office
2003. What happens if you start Word and click on Help |
Activate Product? If you are already activated, a dialog box
saying so will appear. If you are not activated, the Activation
Wizard will start. If you have an expired trial version, a
dialog box will prompt you to enter a valid product key or
purchase a key online.

Guess it must be that my trial period is over. So I did the help, activate
thing and it asks if I want to convert. So guess that's my problem. Thanks
very much. Lorraine

Hi
I'm having the exact same problem as Lorraine resulting in the same message
in the dialogue box. The problem is I am activated and its not a trial
version. The help page does explain what it is, but says nothing about how to
rectify the situation. Would there be any Ctrl - ? button combination that
can undo this?

This same thing happened to me as well. I don't know what happened but mine
is not a trial, but the entire program is locked. I can't open a new document
or modify anything. It says at the bottom, "operation cannot occur because
this document is locked" or something like that.
I have word 2003.
Any advice?

Ctrl+D = format font: why would that lock your Word?

Is this just one document or any document (including a new document)?

Have you upgraded your hardware recently? It sounds as though it needs
activating and it is currently in reduced functionality mode. This happens
when it was not activated and has been used 50 times or you change your
hardware and it thinks that you have move your HDD to another computer.

Have you updated any apps or installed any new apps or utilities or upgrades
recently?

I typed a presentation, must have hit Ctrl+D and now I can't type a thing!
It won't let me format the document, won't clear the problem, won't copy to
another document without the same problem ... Now what?

By default, Ctrl+D opens the Format Font dialog, so you must have done
something else. Perhaps the dialog has opened behind the Word window? If so,
the problem could be caused by the Office Plug-in for Norton AntiVirus.

mine is weird too. everytime i type it says "modification is not allowed
because the selection is locked"

Ctrl+D opens the Font dialog. There is no reason it should lock the program
unless the dialog box opens behind the Word window.

The error message you are receiving indicates that either you haven't
activated Word or it is a trial version that has expired.
