How to unlock Word processor

When trying to use Word to do any updating or writing the
following message is given "This document has been locked
for editing" My question how do i unlock this program so
that I can use it. I have no idea how the lock for edit
was put into effect. Thank you

When I loaded Office 2003, my documents that had been created in Word 2000 were locked. I got around this by going to Microsoft Word Properties (right-click the Word icon, then select Properties), then selecting the Compatibility tab, then choosing Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 2000.
