how to update cross-references to endnotes?

Hello,

I seem to have a problem with updating cross-references to
endnotes. I've created a Word 2000 document with numbered
endnotes and I've inserted cross-references to the
endnotes where I want to repeat the reference.

But now when I insert a new endnote somewhere in the list,
all the subsequent endnotes automatically update
themselves, but the cross-references don't. I've tried
selecting the individual cross-reference fields and then
right-clicking and updating, also updating the whole
document, but the cross-refs will not update.

I'm assuming there must be a way to do this, but I can't
work out how - if anyone has any suggestions I'd be very
grateful for your help

Even if they don't update automatically, they should certainly update when
you Ctrl+A and F9.
