how to update document footer with cell contents ?

N

Nils Sundin

I am trying to update the footer with the contents of a
cell in a table. My only success so far had been to
bookmark the cell of interest and then use a REF field
code in the footer. This works but when I view the
document in print preview mode Word always includes the
cell line formats as well as the cell contents even when I
try to remove borders. Any ideas on how to accomplish this
so as not to see this box? I'm open to VBA suggestions as
well. This is Word Xp. Thanks.

G'Day Nils,

Play with your Table as follows:

Move the cursor near to the left wall of any cell, and use the
black NE-pointing arrow to select - note that the small
end-of-cell marker is included in the selection, because
you have selected the CELL - including its borders.
Examine your bookmark and you will see that this is what
you have actually done.

Now use the cursor to DRAG across the text - this will
select ONLY the text, and is what you need to do to
resolve the problem.

Hi Nils,

Try bookmaking the cell's contents, not the cell itself. Also, if you're
trying to extract just a numeric value, you can bookmark the table (eg
Table1) and use a field like: {=SUM(Table1 B2)}.

Hi Nils

The border appears in the REF field result because you included the
end-of-cell mark within the bookmark. Fix it this way:

- In Tools > Options > View, check the boxes for "Bookmarks" and "All"
(the latter is in the "Formatting marks" section).
- Go back to the table cell. The bookmark (shown by bold [ ] braces)
will include the end-of-cell mark, which looks like this: ¤
- Highlight only the text. Don't include the end-of-cell mark.
- Open the Insert > Bookmark dialog. Select the existing bookmark
name, click the Delete button, enter the name again, and click the Add
button. The bookmark should now *not* include the end-of-cell mark.
- Go to Print Preview again.
