How to update Office when it fails?

Same problem...... Things are getting more and more frustrating. Have tried

When I try to run the Office Update, I get to 51% checking and then get an
error message teling me I cannot check for updates on this computer. Not
sure what the problem is and have tried searching for .msp files and
installer programs. I am totally lost now!

A couple of frequently-posted suggestions for this are:

The update process starts and then unexpectedly quits after you click "Check
for Updates" on the Office Update Web site:

Or, try re-installing Windows Script host v5.6:

Note that it is part of Internet Explorer v6.

Did as you suggested - installed the script - still no updates. Continues to
stop at the same point. now what?

This article has recently changed. Take a new look, and try Methods 5
through 11.

As a last resort, try the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove all
registry entries for Windows Installer, then re-install Office and try the
updates again.

Susan,

I too have the same problem. Inintially Office update was working fine and
I have to reinstall the Office suite after hard drive failure and now it did
not want to do the office update. Followed the instruction on KB304498 from
1 till 9. Did not want to perform 10 yet. Please advise

I did notice during all this 'checking' and 'repairing' that I still have
Office Xp installed on the computer. Should I uninstall all this since I am
using Office 2003? So far, nothing else has worked

It shouldn't make any difference, but it certainly shouldn't hurt, either.
