How to use a red font to make corrections

Greetings:

Using Windows XP Pro/Word XP....

I have my students submit their reports as .doc files. I would like to be
able to make corrections and comments in the body of their text and have
whatever I type show up in red (and perhaps also bold). I can change the
font to red, but as I move about the document and attempt to insert text,
the colour always reverts to black. How can I make the colour change
"stick"?

Thanks!

Protect the document first, then add your comments.

Menu: Tools > Protect Document...
Tracked Changes

NB: You don't have to use a password.
