How to use a theme in MS word

I have a MS Word document that I applied a theme to in order to give it a
more professional look (I basically want a background color that is not plain
white and a texture to the background would be nice too). After I click on
the chosen theme, the whole layout view of the document changes to a web
layout I think- the document takes up the whole screen. When I click on VIEW,
then PRINT LAYOUT, the theme I applied disappears and the document reverts
back to a plain white background. The document also does not print the
background theme chosen - it only prints a white background, nor does the
them transfer into a PDF when converted. What am I doing wrong?! Are there
any suggestions on getting a document to look more professional? Thank you!
