How to use environment variable in hyperlink

I want to create a hyperlink (in Word 2003) that uses the environment
variable UserName or UserProfile. When I insert %Username% into the
hyperlink and subsequently Ctrl+Click on it I get the message the specified
file can not be opened.

Does anyone know how to get this to work?
