How to use Mail merge via email

How do I use mail merging from an access database ?
In the "Email" field of Access 2002, I have "(e-mail address removed)" as a text
field, after a Hyperlink field failed. (first as above, then
mailto:...etc.).
When I try to mail merge them in Word, everything works perfectly, but then
there is no way the recipient can be recognised by Word.

What's next ?
Or is it because I use Outlook Express rather than Outlook ?

Please help me out here.
