how to use outlook off-line if never started up outlook before

I have not used outlook before on my laptop so there is no profile set up on
it, and it is not connected on-line. In trying to use it to open up e-mail
messages that I need to view while off-line, it keeps trying to connect to an
exchange server, which I don't have access to, and when I say work off-line,
it says it can't open outlook.

What options do I have?

Your options will depend on what mail server(s) you want to connect to. It's not clear from your post whether your organization actually uses Exchange for its mail.
