How to use templates - basic newbie question

S

ShortHaul

I do not seem to be able to do anything with a template downloaded from the
site. I selected a template, Invoices, word template, simple invoice. I
clicked the download button. Word starts with the document displayed and
numerous areas as fields. (I have it set to show fields.) No option to save
the file or template.

I double click on a field, nothing happens. I toggle field codes and I see
the text "Macrobutton NoMacro xxxxxx" where xxx is various text. Every field
has that format.

The edit fields, advanced screen shows text "MACROBUTTON
AcceptAllChangesShown xxxx"

What am I doing wrong? What is not set up correctly? Am I missing a macro?
First time using templates from the site. Using templates installed with word
seems to work, for example letter wizard or fax wizard.

I am using Word 2002 sp-2. Windows XP vers 5.1. IE 6.0

Once you've downloaded a template you need to save it in your Templates
folder. Use Save As and set the Save As type to templates.

Other than that I'm not sure what you are asking. The fields you are
describing are MacroButton fields and are fairly common in templates created
for Word prior to Word 2007. Those with "NoMacro" only serve as placeholders
so you can "click" to select the entire field and replace it with your own
text (IOW, nothing will happen). The one that has "AcceptAllChangesShown"
triggers a built-in Word command which will accept all revisions you've made
in the document, if Track Changes has been turned on.

My question is similar to ShortHaul's. I downloaded a Word template and saved
it. When I toggle field codes in the template, I see this: MACROBUTTON
DoFieldClick "[Your Name]".

Beth Melton wrote, "MacroButton fields and are fairly common". They might be
common, but I don't know how to use them! How do I get my standard
information (name, address, etc.) to automatically propagate the fields?

The template looks like a Mail Merge, but is it? Or, can it easily be
changed so I can merge my information into the template?

I guess I should have been more specific and said, "Macro button fields are
fairly common in Microsoft templates".

All they provide is a placeholder so you can "click and type." Nothing else.
IOW, when you see "Your Name" in the template, the intention for you to
click the field and type your name.

I'm not sure what you mean by "automatically propagate the fields". If you
mean you want something like letter head then you need to type it into a
document (or replace the "click and type" fields with your own information,
save it as a template, and then use it as a base for new documents.

I have the same issue. I downloaded a template that had 130 instances of the
field {MACROBUTTON DoFieldClick [Organization Name]}. Of course I wanted to
have all the fields say "My Organization's Name". I tried Find-Replace, but
it didn't work.
This did work, but it seems like an odd way to make this happen:
1. First I selected the entire document (Ctrl-A)
2. Press Shift-f9 which will toggle all of the field codes
3. Use Find-Replace Find= [Organization Name] or whatever the current text
is in the field command. Replace = your new text and then choose Replace All
4. Press f9 to toggle the field codes all back
Voila!
Now can anybody tell me if there is another intended way to have these field
codes actually be easy to change all 130 instances to say what you want them
to say?
