Format Style creates inline or embedded styles (depending on where you use it from) in that page
If you have a style sheet linked to your pages do not use the Format Style
- open and edit the style sheet (.css file) in FP
- best done w/ a 3rd party style sheet editor (configured from FP)

| After more reading and searching and experimenting I discovered what I think
| is the answer!
| for editing: User-defined styles are found under Format|Style|User-defined
| styles.
| for applying: User-defined styles are found in the Style-drop down box (at
| the left end) on the Formatting toolbar.
| They "show up" there after a page is opened that has a link to an external
| css style sheet or has page-level styles defined.

| Here is my "objection"
| The Format button on the Menu bar contains choices of formatting "to be
| applied to the selected text/objects on the page" (font, paragraph, bullets,
| theme, shared borders, etc).
| HOWEVER - the selection of Format|Style allows you to create/edit style
| definitions (on that page), *not* to apply that style to the selected
| object.
| Applying a style is done from the style drop down at the left end of the
| Formatting Toolbar, or the selection of a Style button on some of the
| properties pop-ups (e.g. table).
| That is what led me astray.
