How to vertically align autoshape text?

I am trying to vertically (center) align text in autoshapes in Word 2003.
The help says to use vertical alignment buttons on the format toolbar, but I
do not see those available to add to the toolbar.

This feature is not available in Word 2003. You have to align text
vertically using paragraph formatting (Spacing Before) or the text box top
margin.
