.htaccess and subsites

R

Rach

I have tried to create a subsite from one of my folders and it will not allow
ths as it states i do not have an .htaccess file. I am creating the subsite
to use as a members area. any suggestions on how to fix this or put in a
..htaccess file, if i had this file before it as has been deleted as i have
basic knowledge of website creation.

Thanks Rachael

By "subsite" do you mean sub-domain like http://customer1.yoursite.com which
commonly would point to the "real" folder like www.yoursite.com/customer1

Or do you main Sub-web/sub-site (as in the Frontpage subweb/subsite). You
may need to check with your host that they allow you to do this.

Otherwise, creating *subdomains* is also dependent on whether your hosting
acount allows for this (often there's options to do it through your control
panel e.g. cPanel on Linux). Again, check with your host on the specifics of
these features.

I'm not sure how .htaccess interferes with this and how it relates to your
problem .htaccess has to do with permissions and usually/often for password
protection of pages or folders, in conjuction with .htpasswd.

I do mean subweb when i try to create the subweb i get the message: Server
error: Cannot open ".htaccess": no such file or folder. My host advised me
that i create a member's area this way. Would the fact that my host has
frontpage 2002 server exstensions and i am using frontpage 2003 create a
problem if not this problem then any problem.
