HTML messages don't show images. Why?

F

Frank Dreyfus

Hi,

My friend and I both received email ads from buy.com this AM.

It seems to be the very same email.

But on my system all the images display properly. On his, he sees NO
images; just links.

Many of the links he sees are for gif's which, I think, are the images
that are supposed to be displayed.

We are both running XP Pro SP3, OL 2k3 and both using Firefox.

What's wrong with his system?

I think, but can't say for sure that this may be related to the thread I
started on Friday 13Feb09. See: "Long links don't work. Why?".

Thanks in advance for any help,

Frank

It sounds like he is reading the messages as plain text. Is he using
antivirus or security software to scan incoming email?

Hi,

Yes, he uses AVG AntiVirus and Spybot's "Bad download blocker" and I use
both as well.

How would one read an html message as plain text?

Other messages do show the images so why wouldn't this one?

Thanks,

Frank

If its done within outlook, all messages would be affected. Since it appears
its random the problem is most likely because AVG is scanning the email and
causing corruption.

But I run the same software and don's see the problem.

But I run the same software and don's see the problem.

Running the same software on two PCs doesn't mean that software is
configured identically on both PCs.

Hi Frank,

I had the same problem suddenly start appearing on my computer one day
(Vista and Outlook 2007). The newsgroup email had been coming in fine
with graphics and HTML, then suddenly one day it started coming as
plain text. However many other graphic emails still came in fine. I
thought maybe the newsgroup changed something but looking at the same
email on a different computer and it was fine.

The "fix" I found, and was able to verify today, (The newsgroup email
address with the problem came today and all is back to normal.) was to
uncheck "Certify Email" in AVG. A very easy fix once I knew what to
look for. The other computer also runs AVG and still has "Certify
Email" checked but it didn't affect the emails on that computer (was
running XP and Outlook 2000)

Cindy, You're a lifesaver!!!

Thanks so much for your help,

And Diane told you two days ago that the problem was likely your AV program.

program.

You're right. She did. But w/o knowing where to look it was little
help.

She gave me a needle in a haystack.

What surprises me is that this issue isn't widely known. I had
referenced an earlier thread with, similarly, no solution.

Having found the solution, with abundent thanks to Cindy, I have to
wonder why AVG hasn't fixed this.

AVG blames the problem on a flaw in the way Word creates email messages.
Maybe so. But a flaw in word would affect virtually all mail recipients.

Thanks for your feedback,

It is one of the most widely known issues there is. Simply search this
newsgroup and you will see the hundreds to thousands of times we MVPs warn
people to disable scanning of email.

It's not just AVG. ANY program that wedges itself between a mail client and
server can lead to this problem, even if the program doesn't modify the data
stream. An AV program that adds text to the message is certainly prone to
causing this problem because it disrupts the entire data stream.
