HTTP & FPSE

Laura

I have Publisher 2000 and am really struggling to upload in HTTP protocol.

I have read all the information pages you have recommended and trawled Yahoo
for the last three days, but with no luck.

I also know that FPSE are not installed on my site
http://www.ab-courier.com/_vti_inf.html as i don't see the Front Page
Configuration Page. However my host assures me they are installed.

I have gone into 'My Network Places' clicked 'Add a new network place' but
every HTTP address I try will not work. However I have managed to upload in
FTP protocol via 'My Network Places'. I have spoken to my host and they have
told me my HTTP URL is http://www.ab-courier.com. But this does not work.

I am missing something simple, as I feel like I have hit a brick wall with
my host.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Laura.

If you have read all the articles, and also know that the FPSE are NOT
installed, then you also know that you cannot use HTTP uploading protocol.

If you are using Easyspace for hosting, I found this within a few minutes of
reading their support:

"If your FrontPage built website includes any of the components listed above
then you will need to select either Business or Pro NT hosting packages,
where they are free components of the package. Do not select any Linux
packages." (This applies to your Publisher built site that uses FPSE)

Perhaps your hosting program does not include FPSE?

I also found this:

"Installing or Reinstalling FrontPage Extensions

To Install/Reinstall
To install or reinstall FrontPage extensions
login to the Control Panel
Select Website
Choose domain name from the drop down list and hit proceed
Go to the tab 'activate Add-ons' and select 'FrontPage Extensions'
Choose the packages and hit activate

Reinstallation will be needed if extensions have been damaged and are
producing an .htaccess error when your website is viewed. "

Search under support at your host for "front" or FPSE or FrontPage and you
will get a list of topics about using FPSE and how to upload. If you aren't
using a form, then you can use FTP.

Hi David,

Thanks for your speedy reply.

I actually have my site though a company called Ufindus, but I can only
assume they use Easy Space.

I have searched my hosts site many times over the last few days and have
read all the information on this subject. They have assured me that I do have
the correct hosting package and that FPSE can be installed without upgrading
to a different package!

There is even a section on their help pages that mentions Publisher forms
and the
requirements - FPSE installed & HTTP Upload. So they are clearly aware of
the issue.

I have been to my 'Active Add-ons' and selected re-install 'FrontPage
Extensions' three times over the last few days and receive a message saying I
have been placed in a queue.

For my own sanity, can you please clarify when you said:

"then you also know that you cannot use HTTP uploading protocol."

Do you mean that either 1. you can't even attempt to begin the upload, or 2.
you can upload in HTTP but the site won't work?
So even though FPSE are not installed on my site should I at least be able
to upload, or will one not work without the other.

Thanks again for your invaluable help, this has been driving me crazy for
the last few days. I have been using Publisher for the last 7 years and have
already created two sites in Publisher, but I have always used FTP with no
problem. However now that I want to add a publisher form, I’m hitting
problems and unfortunately have a very unhelpful host who I am stuck with
till November!

Regards, Laura.

You indicated that you had read all the material about using forms with
Publisher, and that is why I said you should know that you can't use HTTP
uploading protocol...you can't without functional FPSE. Reference: Publisher
web publication forms 101:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/archive/2006/01/07/80564.aspx

It now sounds like you are just waiting for your host to reinstall the FPSE.
Keep testing with http://www.ab-courier.com/_vti_inf.html and that will tell
you when they are functional. Then you should be able to use HTTP....we hope
;-)

....and to not attempt to use FTP or you will break the FPSE and you'll go
round and round with your host.
For what it's worth...waiting in a queue for FPSE to be installed is
ridiculous...it takes 2 minutes to do from a "real" control panel; I'd find
another host.

David,

I highly recommend Soupermail. It's not a snap to set up - the user has
to be able to "RTFM," but it's not hard either. The instruction in the
soupermail.pl file tell users exactly what lines to change, such as
their server name and folder. They create two text files: config.txt and
soupermail.allow. The config.txt files consists of something like:
mailto: (e-mail address removed)
subject: Whatever you want to use to identify the form
mimeon: yes
nomailfooter: yes
alphasort: no
gotosuccess: http://www.domainname.net/successpage.html

The soupermail.allow file can be empty, it just needs to find one.

The user can still take advantage of Pub's form capabilities to add
fields, etc. The only difference is it references soupermail.pl as the
action.

This is a very secure mail form and it can be very powerful. It's free
and available at http://soupermail.sourceforge.net/ There is a support
forum, FAQ and more to help the user get it working but if one can read
and use an FTP program, it's not a major task.

Laura,

Since you are already comfortable with FTP uploading, perhaps you could use
this alternative "form" script that doesn't rely on FPSE:

---------------

<FORM action=mailto:[email protected] method="post"
enctype="text/plain">
<TABLE BORDER="0" CELLSPACING="0" CELLPADDING="4" WIDTH="90%">
<TR>
<TD width="30%"><DIV align="right">
<B>Name:</B>
</DIV>
</TD>
<TD width="70%">
<INPUT type="text" name="name" size="20">
</TD>
</TR>
<TR>
<TD><DIV align="right"><B>Email:</B></DIV>
</TD>
<TD>
<INPUT type="text" name="email" size="20">
</TD>
</TR>
<TR>
<TD><DIV align="right">
<B>Comment:</B>
</DIV>
</TD>
<TD><TEXTAREA name="comment" cols="30" wrap="virtual" rows="4">
</TEXTAREA>
</TD></TR>
<TR>
<TD>&nbsp;</TD>
<TD>
<INPUT type="submit" name="submit" value="Submit">
<INPUT type="reset" name="reset" value="Reset">
</TD></TR>
</TABLE>
</FORM>

---------------------

Just copy and paste it into your code fragement tool, and make the obvious
changes, and try it with a web preview. You might be able to adapt it to
your use instead of using the Publisher form. And you might also look to
your host for other forms programs they might supply...

David,

Yes, you may, and you don't even have to give me credit!

Seriously, I used it before I started using WebPlus and I still use for
any complicated forms. Once the soupermail.pl script is set up, I just
change the configure file to whatever I need.

Here's the only things necessary to change in the script:
$soupermailAdmin = 'your email address';
$serverRoot = '/home/server name/name of folder you upload to';
# If you want to hide your config files from people browsing your site,
# provide a path OUTSIDE your server root here.
# Some examples:
# $privateRoot = "c:/inetpub/private";

That's about it as far as what needs to be changed. A couple of other
settings can be changed. Of course, once uploaded, the permissions need
to be set (explained in the pdf manual).

For Pub users struggling with FP extensions or HTTP uploading, this
makes it a lot easier.

Did I mention it is FREE!
